May Day: Explosions in the Sky play the Fox Theater in Oakland

Sitting in the Fox Theater's den, a bar connected to the Oakland venue, the Sonic Ambulance party was enjoying some overly priced beers when the strangest thing happened. A stranger walked by, looked at us and said, "Osama bin Laden is dead." What next came onto the bar televisions were news reports confirming what we initially thought were the words of a rambling crazy person.

With this fresh in our minds, Explosions in the Sky took the stage for the first time in Oakland to play an emotional night of post-rock anthems.

Despite touring in support of their recently released album, Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, the band made sure to play old fan-favorites as well, including "The Only Moment We Were Alone" and "The Birth and Death of the Day."

"The Only Moment We Were Alone"

"The Birth and Death of the Day."

The band played a total of nine songs, including the closer from Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, "Let Me Back In," seen below.

"Let Me Back In"

Overall, it was a spirited performance by the band and the concert goers were really into it. Great shows and instrumental music like Explosions in the Sky are always enjoyable because they truly do feel like they can be the soundtrack to your life -- filled with crescendos and decrescendos, rising guitars and crashing distortion, beautiful melodies and vicious drums. And after hearing the news prior to the show, the music seemed like it could begin the sequel to that movie. The opening credits to a new decade -- one filled with fresh thoughts and great music.
